Short answer: for a personal tax appointment, bring your tax slips for the year, receipts for anything you plan to claim (such as tuition, childcare, medical expenses and donations), your most recent notice of assessment, any CRA letters you received, and business records if you are self-employed. Ontario renters and homeowners may also need rent or property tax details. What you need depends on your own situation. Our office is at Office 19, 695 Markham Road, Scarborough, Ontario M1H 2A5. Do not email banking credentials or passwords. For SINs, employee tax information, and full tax slips, contact us first for instructions on the safest way to send documents.

This guide is organized by situation, so you can skip to what applies to you and finish with a short appointment checklist. For a full reference list of CRA slip types, see our tax documents checklist.

Phone: (437) 410-7999

Our office is located in Cedar Heights Plaza.

Walk-ins are welcome during office hours. Calling ahead is optional, but you can contact us first and tell us what kind of return you need so we can tell you what to bring. For more about the services we offer locally, see our Scarborough tax and accounting services page.

What everyone should bring or have ready

  • Your most recent notice of assessment (NOA). It shows your RRSP deduction limit and other carry-forward information.
  • Any CRA letters from the year, such as review requests, reassessments or balance-owing notices.
  • Notes on life changes during the year: marriage, separation, a new child, a move, or arriving in or leaving Canada.
  • Spouse or common-law partner details, including their income for the year, if you have a partner.
  • Your identity details. Do not email banking credentials or passwords. For SINs, employee tax information, and full tax slips, contact us first for instructions on the safest way to send documents.

What to bring for your situation

Requirements differ from client to client. Use these lists as a guide, and bring what fits.

If you were employed

  • A T4 slip from every employer you worked for during the year, including short-term and part-time jobs.
  • A T4E if you received Employment Insurance benefits.
  • Records of union or professional dues if they are not already on your T4.
  • If you plan to claim employment expenses, the form your employer completed to confirm the conditions of your employment, plus your receipts.

If you were self-employed, a contractor, or a gig worker

  • A summary of income: invoices, sales records and annual statements from platforms you worked through.
  • Any T4A slips you received.
  • Expense receipts, sorted by category, such as supplies, phone, software, insurance and professional fees.
  • A vehicle logbook and fuel, repair and insurance records if you claim vehicle expenses.
  • Home-office details (the space used for work and your home costs) if you plan to claim them.
  • GST/HST collected and paid, and your GST/HST account details, if you are registered.

We prepare these returns through our self-employed and contractor tax service.

If you have investments

  • T5 (interest and dividends), T3 (trust and mutual fund income) and T5008 (securities transactions) slips.
  • For investments you sold, records of what you originally paid, as brokerage slips do not always show it.
  • RRSP contribution receipts, and FHSA slips if you have a First Home Savings Account.

If you or a family member studied

  • The tuition slip from each school, college or university you attended.
  • Let us know if a student plans to transfer unused tuition amounts to a parent, grandparent or spouse.

If you paid for childcare

  • Receipts from daycares, before- and after-school programs, day camps or caregivers, showing the child, the dates and the amount paid.

If you had medical expenses

  • Receipts for eligible medical costs for you, your spouse and dependent children, such as prescriptions, dental work, glasses and paramedical services.
  • Pharmacy annual summaries, if you have them.
  • Statements showing what your insurance reimbursed, and any premiums you paid yourself for a private health plan.

If you rent or own your home in Ontario

Where it applies, rent or property tax paid for your principal residence in Ontario can be relevant to the Ontario energy and property tax credit, which is part of the Ontario Trillium Benefit and is applied for with your return. Bring:

  • Renters: the total rent you paid for the year for each Ontario address, and your landlord’s name.
  • Homeowners: your property tax bill or statement for the year.
  • If you moved: the amounts and dates for each address.

The CRA administers this credit for Ontario and explains eligibility on its Ontario programs page.

If you made donations or paid other amounts you may claim

  • Official donation receipts.
  • Receipts for moving expenses, if you moved for work or school.
  • Records of tax instalments you paid during the year.

If you own a corporation

Your corporation files its own T2 return, separate from your personal return. Bring your personal slips as above, including any T4 or dividend slips your company issued to you. For the company’s return, we will need its bookkeeping records and financial statements. See our corporate tax services. Corporate return fees are quoted separately and confirmed in writing.

Your appointment-preparation checklist

  1. ☐ Collect slips as they arrive and keep them in one folder or envelope.
  2. ☐ Sort receipts by type: medical, childcare, donations, tuition, business expenses.
  3. ☐ Find your last notice of assessment and any CRA letters from the year.
  4. ☐ Write down life changes and any questions you want to ask.

  7. ☐ Optional: call ahead to confirm what to bring for your situation.
  8. ☐ Do not email banking credentials or passwords. For SINs, employee tax information, and full tax slips, contact us first for instructions on the safest way to send documents.

Frequently asked questions

What documents do I need for my tax return in Canada?

It depends on your situation. Most people need their tax slips, receipts for credits and deductions they plan to claim, and their most recent notice of assessment. Self-employed people also need income and expense records, and Ontario renters or homeowners may need rent or property tax details.

Do I need last year’s notice of assessment?

It is very useful. Your notice of assessment shows your RRSP deduction limit and other information carried forward from last year, and it helps confirm what the CRA assessed.

What if I am missing a tax slip?

Ask the employer or institution that issues it for a copy, and check your CRA account, where you may be able to view a slip once the issuer has sent it to the CRA. Tell us which slip is missing and we will explain your options.

Can I claim rent on my Ontario tax return?

Rent paid for your principal residence in Ontario can be relevant to the Ontario energy and property tax credit, which is part of the Ontario Trillium Benefit and is applied for with your return. Bring the total rent you paid and your landlord’s name.

Can I email my tax documents to you?

Do not email banking credentials or passwords. For SINs, employee tax information, and full tax slips, contact us first for instructions on the safest way to send documents.

Where is your Scarborough office?
