How We Work: From First Call to Filed Return

Here is how we work: you tell us what you need, we send a written quote and a document list, you send your documents, we prepare and file your return, and you get a plain-language summary and a full copy of everything we filed. Business clients also get a calendar of their deadlines with a reminder before each one. This page walks through each step so you know what to expect before you call.

The short version

  1. Tell us what you need by phone, in person or online.
  2. Get a written quote and a list of documents to send.
  3. Send your documents through the private upload link we give you.
  4. We prepare, you review. We explain the result before anything is filed.
  5. We file and send your copy, with a one-page summary in plain language.

Step 1: How do you get started?

Call (437) 410-7999, walk into our Scarborough office, or send a message through the contact form. We ask a few simple questions: what type of return or service you need, whether your situation has changed since last year, and whether anything is overdue. That lets us tell you which documents to bring and what the work will cost.

You do not have to visit us. We also work with clients across Canada, except Quebec, through remote tax filing.

Step 2: What does the quote look like?

You get a written quote before any work starts. It states what is included and what the fee is. Fees depend on the complexity of your return or, for businesses, the size and volume of work. Work outside the agreed scope is quoted in writing before it begins.

Our starting prices are public: personal returns from $69.99, self-employed returns from $149.99, corporate T2 returns from $250 (nil) or $499 (active), and small business packages from $99 per month, all before HST. See personal tax and small business accounting packages for details.

Step 3: What do you send us?

We give you a checklist for your situation, so you send everything once instead of in pieces. Typical items are your slips, last year's Notice of Assessment, and receipts or records if you are self-employed or run a business. Our guides tax documents checklist and Tax Return Preparation in Scarborough: What to Bring list what most people need, and business owners can use What Should You Give Your Bookkeeper Each Month?

Do not email banking credentials or passwords. For SINs, employee tax information, and full tax slips, contact us first for instructions on the safest way to send documents.

Step 4: How do we prepare and review your work?

We prepare your return or books from your documents, check them against what we know about your situation, and ask you about anything that looks incomplete. Before we file anything, we explain the result in plain language so you understand it. You stay responsible for your return, which is why we make sure you can follow it.

You hear from us at each stage: when your documents arrive, when your work is ready for your review, and when it has been filed.

Step 5: What happens when we file?

We are a CRA-authorized electronic filer, so we file your return electronically. You then receive a one-page summary in English, Urdu or Punjabi and a full copy of everything we filed, for your own records. Simple personal returns are usually ready in about two days once we have your documents. A one-day express service is available when your information is complete and we have agreed the date with you in advance. Complex returns take longer, and the timing depends on our workload.

What happens after you file?

Your refund or balance owing is decided by your tax situation and the CRA, not by your preparer, so we never promise a result. We do stay available. If the CRA sends a notice about a return we prepared, we explain it at no charge. We can help organize documents and prepare responses to CRA letters once the scope and fee are confirmed in writing. For background, read CRA Notice of Assessment: How to Read It and What to Check and CRA Notices Guide: Understanding What To Do When You Receive One.

How is it different for business clients?

Business clients get the same steps, plus a regular rhythm. We set up a calendar of your payroll, HST, instalment and corporate filing dates and remind you before each one. Monthly bookkeeping clients receive a report within 10 business days of month-end. Payroll clients get a checklist before each run and a confirmation after it. Packages that include it also get a year-end planning call. See our small business accounting packages.

Questions about how we work

How long does it take to get my return done?

Simple personal returns are usually ready in about two days once we have all your documents. A one-day express service is available when your information is complete and we have agreed the date with you in advance. Complex returns, late filings and business returns take longer, and we tell you the expected timing when we send your quote.

Do I have to come to the office?

No. You can visit our Scarborough office, where walk-ins are welcome and parking is free, or work with us entirely online from anywhere in Canada except Quebec.

Will you explain my return to me?

Yes. Before we file, we explain the result in plain language, and afterwards you receive a one-page summary and a full copy of what was filed. We work in English, Urdu and Punjabi.

What if I am behind on filing?

We prepare prior-year and late returns and can help you bring several years up to date. Filing as soon as possible limits further penalties and interest. Tell us what is overdue when you first contact us.
