When Do You Need to Register for HST in Toronto

For most businesses, mandatory registration begins when worldwide taxable supplies, including zero-rated supplies and those of associated persons, exceed the $30,000 small-supplier threshold. The timing differs depending on whether you cross it in one calendar quarter or over four consecutive calendar quarters. Crossing it in one quarter means charging GST/HST on the sale that takes you over and registering within 29 days. See the CRA registration rules and timing examples. Special rules apply: commercial rideshare and taxi drivers must register even when they are small suppliers. Voluntary registration may allow eligible input tax credits, but also brings collection, filing and remittance obligations. We help you determine which rules apply.

GST/HST filing frequency and due dates

The CRA assigns your GST/HST reporting period, and you can confirm it in your CRA account. For monthly and quarterly filers, the return and any payment are due one month after the end of the reporting period. For example, a quarter ending March 31 is due April 30.

For most annual filers, the return and final payment are due three months after fiscal year-end. Annual filers who are sole proprietors, have a December 31 fiscal year-end, and had business income for tax purposes that year generally pay by April 30 and file by June 15. Special rules apply to listed financial institutions. Some annual filers must also make quarterly GST/HST instalment payments. Your annual filing deadline does not replace those payment obligations.

If a due date falls on a weekend or a CRA-recognized holiday, a return or payment the CRA receives the next business day is on time. See the CRA's reporting requirements and deadlines. For how to send a payment, read our guide to GST/HST payments to the CRA, and for the full process see our complete GST/HST filing guide for Ontario businesses. Understanding GST HST Obligations for Toronto Businesses

The Harmonized Sales Tax in Ontario combines the 5 percent federal GST with the 8 percent provincial sales tax for a total rate of 13 percent. Toronto businesses that are registered for HST must collect this tax on most goods and services they sell, file regular HST returns, and remit the net tax owing to the CRA. The filing frequency depends on your annual revenue with most small businesses filing quarterly or annually. Getting your GST HST filing right is essential because errors can result in significant penalties and interest charges.

Registered businesses may recover GST/HST paid or payable on eligible purchases to the extent they are used in commercial activities. Personal use, exempt activities and restricted expenses can limit a claim, and supporting records are required. See the CRA input tax credit guidance. We help you identify eligible credits and retain the documentation supporting them.

Eligible businesses can elect to use the CRA Quick Method of accounting. You still charge the applicable GST/HST rate, but calculate remittances using the prescribed rate on eligible tax-included sales. Most operating-expense input tax credits cannot be claimed under this method. Eligibility, the election deadline and whether it saves money depend on your circumstances. We compare it with the regular method before recommending an election.

Common GST/HST Mistakes Toronto Businesses Make

Common mistakes include missing a registration deadline, charging GST/HST on exempt supplies, claiming credits for personal expenses, and failing to file a required return when there is no tax owing. Input tax credits for meals and entertainment are generally restricted, with exceptions. The CRA guide for GST/HST registrants explains these obligations. We help you review your reporting method and keep records that support your return.

Filing and payment deadlines both matter. A late return with a balance owing can attract a penalty of 1% of the amount owing, plus 25% of that initial penalty for each complete overdue month, up to 12 months. Interest can also apply to overdue payments. Other penalties have different rules; see CRA GST/HST filing penalties. Our bookkeeping services help reconcile tax collected and eligible credits before the deadline.

HST for E-Commerce and Online Businesses in Ontario

GST/HST treatment for online sales depends on what you sell, the place-of-supply rules and the customer's circumstances. Sales to customers outside Canada are not automatically free of GST/HST; zero-rating depends on the applicable conditions. Digital services, marketplace sales, subscriptions and drop-shipping arrangements can have different rules. We review your transactions to determine the appropriate treatment within the scope of our services.

The CRA digital-economy registration guidance distinguishes simplified and normal GST/HST registration for affected non-resident businesses. Simplified registrants cannot claim input tax credits. A Canadian-resident online business generally follows the normal business rules; the non-resident simplified regime should not be applied automatically. We review your sales channels, customer locations and registration status, alongside your corporate tax and bookkeeping records. Contact (437) 410-7999 to discuss your GST/HST needs.
