How this is calculated, limits and sources
This is a simplified estimate, not a tax return or refund calculation. It assumes a full year of Canadian residence and full-year CPP eligibility, with either employment income or sole-proprietor income. It includes the basic personal amounts, eligible CPP/EI credits, the Canada employment amount in employment mode, Ontario surtax and Health Premium, and Ontario and B.C. tax reductions. Other provincial low-income reductions, family credits, tuition, medical expenses, dividends, capital gains, alternative minimum tax and the Canada Workers Benefit are not calculated. Deduction eligibility and limits are not checked: enter eligible amounts yourself. Self-employed EI opt-in premiums and mixed employment/self-employment are not modelled. The bracket rate excludes credit phase-outs and contribution effects. After-tax income is before RRSP savings contributions. Your actual refund or balance owing also depends on tax already paid and your complete return.
Sources: CRA 2026 formulas and rate tables; B.C. 2026 tax changes; PEI 2026 budget rate changes. Includes the published B.C. and PEI 2026 budget changes. Calculator corrections applied September 28, 2026.
Ontario tax refund calculator: will you get a refund or owe tax?
Enter the tax already deducted from your pay (T4 box 22), or your instalments if self-employed.
Run the calculator first.
Self-employed: the comparison includes both halves of your CPP, because nothing is deducted from your income for it during the year.
What this comparison leaves out
This compares federal and provincial income tax only. Credits and deductions the calculator does not include, such as tuition, medical expenses and the Canada Workers Benefit, can change your real result. EI is not part of this comparison. Your actual refund or balance owing is set by the CRA.

Ontario and Federal Tax Brackets for 2026
Canada uses a progressive tax system where higher income is taxed at higher rates. For 2026, the federal brackets range from 14 percent on the first 58,523 dollars of taxable income to 33 percent on income over 258,482 dollars. Ontario tax is added on top, starting at 5.05 percent and rising to 13.16 percent at high incomes. Knowing the brackets helps you plan RRSP contributions and other deductions. Limitations of Online Tax Calculators
No online calculator can account for every situation, such as foreign income, complex investments, trust income or the alternative minimum tax. Treat the result as an estimate, and have a tax accountant review anything complicated. The CRA's assessment is always the final figure.
Ontario Tax Calculator FAQ
How is income tax calculated in Ontario?
You pay federal tax and Ontario tax on the same taxable income. Both use brackets, so each slice of your income is taxed at its own rate, and the rate rises as income rises. Ontario also adds a surtax and a health premium at higher incomes, and both are included in this calculator.
What is my marginal tax rate in Ontario?
It is the combined federal and Ontario rate on your next dollar of income. The calculator shows it under your results. It is higher than your average rate, which is your total tax divided by your income.
How much CPP and EI will I pay?
The calculator estimates both for the full year from your income. Employees pay CPP and EI through payroll deductions. Self-employed workers pay both the employee and employer halves of CPP, and EI premiums are optional for them.
Why is my real tax refund different from the estimate?
The calculator uses the basic personal amounts and the main credits. Your real return also reflects tax already paid, tuition, medical and donation claims, family credits, other income and anything else on your slips. That is why the result is an estimate and the CRA's assessment is the final figure.
