CPA or tax accountant: what should decide your choice?

A CPA is a Chartered Professional Accountant. The designation involves professional education and experience requirements. It matters when your engagement requires it, and it can be one reason to choose a provider with experience relevant to your needs. Learn about the CPA qualification path.

For personal tax preparation, CRA's EFILE eligibility rules allow qualifying firms, organizations and individuals to apply; CPA membership is not a listed eligibility condition. EFILE access is not a professional designation or proof of specialist expertise. Read CRA's eligibility requirements.

CPA Ontario requires a public accounting licence for lead signers of audit or review engagements within its Ontario scope rules. CPA membership alone is not that licence. Confirm the requirements for your engagement and report recipient. Check CPA Ontario's licensing guidance.

If a lender or investor requests a report, obtain the exact requirements in writing. If you have a business sale, restructuring, cross-border issue or dispute, ask about relevant specialist experience before choosing a provider.
