Personal income, self-employment, or both?
If you have employment, pension or investment income, start with personal tax preparation. Tell us about other income, rental activity, property sales or unfiled years when you enquire so we can identify the work involved.
If you work for yourself, we also need your business income and expense records. That includes freelance work, contracting and rideshare or delivery income. If you have both a job and a side business, include your employment slips and business records so we can report both income sources on your personal return.
Our personal tax service and self-employed tax preparation pages explain the wider scope. You can begin an enquiry even if you are unsure which applies.
How remote preparation works
- Tell us about your return. Include the tax year, income sources, any unfiled years and any CRA response date.
- Confirm the documents and fee. We explain how to provide your records, review the work required and give you a quote. Any bookkeeping or additional filings are identified separately.
- Review the prepared return. We ask about missing information and give you the return to review.
- Authorize filing. After your approval and the required authorization, we electronically submit eligible returns.
Timing depends on the records available, the work required and our availability. CRA assessment and refund timing are outside our control. Our remote filing page explains the process further.
Documents to gather
Personal tax returns
- Income slips that apply to you and your previous Notice of Assessment.
- Relevant receipts, such as RRSP contributions, tuition, donations, medical costs or childcare expenses.
- Details of rental income, investments, foreign income and property transactions, where applicable.
Self-employed returns — also gather
- Income summaries, invoices, business expense receipts, and bank and credit card statements.
- GST/HST records, if applicable.
- Vehicle-use records if you want us to review a business vehicle claim.
Keep business and personal items identifiable; a payment from a business account is not automatically deductible.
A receipt alone does not establish entitlement to a credit or deduction. The CRA's filing preparation guidance and our tax documents checklist can help you prepare.
Missing something? Tell us which documents you have and which are outstanding. We will identify what needs attention before confirming when the return can be completed.
Starting fees and what can change the quote
Prices are in Canadian dollars, before HST, per return. Corporate fees are per tax year.
| Return | Starting fee | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Basic personal T1 | $69.99 | Additional income sources or complexity can increase the fee. |
| Self-employed return | $149.99 | The work depends on the business activity and condition of the records. |
| Nil corporate T2 | $250 | Subject to review of the corporation's activity and records. Having no income does not by itself establish eligibility for this price. |
| Active corporate T2 | $499 | Covers federal T2 preparation and electronic filing when you provide financial statements. |
Rental income, capital gains, foreign income and several unfiled years can require additional work. We confirm the scope and fee before starting; work outside the agreed scope is quoted in writing first.
Corporate starting fees exclude bookkeeping, financial statement preparation, payroll filings and the Ontario annual return. Those services are quoted separately in writing. For other filings, including GST/HST returns or a federal corporate annual return, confirm inclusion in your written quote. See the corporate pricing and exclusions.
If you also own an incorporated business
Tell us the corporation's year-end, last filed tax year and whether its financial statements are ready. The T2 is a separate return from your personal filing. If the books are incomplete, we review what must be finished and quote that work separately.
For the records needed, see corporate T2 preparation. If several years are outstanding, our unfiled corporate returns guide explains how to prepare for a catch-up enquiry.
