At a glance

What does a small business accountant do?

A small business accountant keeps your records accurate, files the returns the CRA requires, and warns you about deadlines before they turn into penalties. For most owners that means monthly bookkeeping, payroll and remittances if you have employees, HST/GST returns if you are registered, and a corporate tax return every year if you are incorporated.

We do all of it from one office. You are not coordinating a bookkeeper, a payroll provider and a tax preparer who never talk to each other, and you always know who has your file.

How much do our small business packages cost?

These are starting prices in Canadian dollars, before HST. Your final price depends on the size of your business and the volume of work, and we confirm it in a written quote before work starts.

How does working with us work?

  1. Tell us about your business by phone, in person or through the contact form.
  2. Get a written quote and a list of what to send.
  3. We set up your calendar. Every business client gets a calendar of payroll, HST, instalment and corporate filing dates, and a reminder before each one.
  4. We keep you updated. You hear from us when your documents arrive, when your work is ready for your review, and when it is filed.
  5. You get a plain-language summary of what we filed, and a full copy for your records.

What does payroll include?

We run payroll from start to finish inside your own QuickBooks subscription. That covers calculating pay and deductions, sending source deductions to the CRA on schedule, and preparing T4s and ROEs. You pay QuickBooks directly and give us accountant access, and we advise which plan fits your business. Pay and remittances go out automatically from the bank account you connect.

What do we need from you?

For bookkeeping, we need your bank and credit card statements, sales and expense records, and any CRA letters each month. Our guide What Should You Give Your Bookkeeper Each Month? lists exactly what to gather. Behind on your books? Start with the Catch-Up Bookkeeping Checklist for Canadian Small Businesses.

Do not email banking credentials or passwords. For SINs, employee tax information, and full tax slips, contact us first for instructions on the safest way to send documents.

What happens if the CRA writes to you?

If the CRA sends a notice about a return we prepared, we explain it at no charge. We can help organize documents and prepare responses to CRA letters once the scope and fee are confirmed in writing. For a plain-English overview, see CRA Notices Guide: Understanding What To Do When You Receive One.

Who is this for?

Owners of small and incorporated businesses, employers with a handful of employees, people starting a business, and contractors or Uber and delivery drivers who also need to deal with HST. If you are not sure which package fits, call us and we will tell you plainly, even if the answer is the smallest one.
